Marilyn’s Movies in the Netherlands

A centennial tribute to Marilyn is now underway at Lab111 in Amsterdam.

  • SOME LIKE IT HOT: June 21-23, June 27 – “Sparkling, daring and still irresistibly funny, Some Like It Hot remains one of cinema’s great comedy classics. Marilyn Monroe shines as Sugar Kane, a singer dreaming of love, luxury and a fresh start.”
  • GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES: June 25 – “Second-billed Marilyn Monroe is the blonde in question in this second film version of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: Miss Lorelei Lee, whose philosophy is ‘diamonds are a girl’s best friend.'”
  • ALL ABOUT EVE: July 5, July 14 – “Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s razor-sharp backstage classic is still the ultimate portrait of ambition, performance and perfectly polished cruelty.”

Meanwhile in Rotterdam, a screening of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes will be preceded by a lecture on Monday, June 22, at 7:30 pm, as part of the Film College series at Lantaren Venster.

“On the occasion of what would have been her 100th birthday, this film lecture reflects on the enduring fascination with Monroe and the persistence of the image that has been created of her. Film scholar and journalist Timna Rauch casts a new light on Monroe, showing how she actively shaped her star persona, delved into literature and acting theory, and steered her career with remarkable acuity. This creates a richer and more layered picture of a woman who was ahead of her time.

Afterwards, we will screen Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, in which Monroe fully lives up to her iconic status as a comedic talent and performer; and at the same time plays with precisely the image that has defined her for so long.”

At Slieker Film in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden, Bob de Boer will introduce Some Like It Hot on Thursday, June 25, at 7:45 pm – with a ‘regular’ screening also set for June 29.

“From a young age, he was fascinated by actress, singer, and model Marilyn Monroe. Over the years, he has collected all sorts of things about this ‘pin-up of all time’: books, magazines, photos, films, and, not to forget, her music. Bob owns several collectibles related to this icon from the last century. On Thursday evening, June 25, he will give a mini-introduction to Marilyn: her life, music, some interesting facts, and, of course, something about the 1959 film Some Like It Hot by director Billy Wilder … Some Like It Hot is considered by film experts to be one of the best comedies ever made. It is also a film in which Marilyn Monroe is seen at the peak of her abilities. Her role as Sugar Kane is disarming, musical, and moving: vulnerable and strong at the same time.
