Marilyn Monroe 100: From Prague to Playboy

Marilyn by Sam Shaw, 1957

Marilyn Monroe 100, an exhibition featuring photography and art, is now open at the Czech Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Prague until October 4th.

“The captivating story of Marilyn Monroe awaits you, presenting her not only as an actress and cultural phenomenon, but also as a woman full of fragility and inner strength. The exhibition includes more than 270 photographs by 31 renowned authors, including Sam Shaw, André de Dienes, Bert Stern, Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, George Barris, Philippe Halsman, Tom Kelley, Bruno Bernard and Milton H. Greene.

The exhibition also includes more than 30 works by prominent American and Czech artists such as Andy Warhol, Romero Britto, Mr. Brainwash, Charles Fazzino, Michael Godard, Pasta Oner, Štěpán Mareš and others. You can view personal objects that provide an intimate look into the private life of a woman who became a timeless symbol of beauty, fame and vulnerability.”

A catalogue for Marilyn Monroe 100 is available, with a 1952 cover image by Vienna-born Frank Powolny, head of still and portrait photography at Twentieth Century-Fox.

A photograph showing Marilyn onstage during her 1954 tour of Korea is attributed to ‘Dorothy Hope Masi,’ probably in reference to Dolores Hope Masi, a friend of Marilyn and husband Joe DiMaggio. (However, Dolores did not accompany the DiMaggios on the trip, and the photo was most likely a gift.)

Another image, showing Marilyn at Madison Square Garden for her circus appearance in 1955, is attributed to Max Peter Haas, a German-born photographer based in New York.

GOMA is hosting a guided tour on Tuesday, July 14, at 6:30 pm.

A selection of original works, plus prints and memorabilia, is available at the gift shop.

And finally, Marilyn graces the cover of Playboy‘s Czech edition for July 2026, with a sultry 1951 portrait by John Florea, and more images from the exhibition inside.
