Singer Billie Eilish, 19, has been compared to Marilyn after going blonde for her second album, Happier Than Ever. Her appearance at last night’s Met Gala in New York, inspired Vogue‘s Kerry McDermott to declare her peachy Oscar de la Renta gown an ‘ode to Marilyn Monroe,’ specifically the Renié gown worn by Marilyn to the Oscars in 1951 (see here.) Billie, meanwhile, has said she wanted to recreate the lavish ballgowns of the ‘holiday Barbies’ she loved as a child.
Marilyn only rarely wore the full skirts so popular in the 1950s, preferring to accentuate her curves. My friend Fraser was reminded of Marilyn’s 1951 fashion shoot for PIC magazine, modelling a Don Loper gown from Saks Fifth Avenue (see here.)
Billie’s new, shorter hairdo, meanwhile, brought to mind – for me at least – Marilyn in Let’s Make Love (1960.)
