Cine Club Marilyn: From Gloucester to Manchester, and Beyond

A Saturday matinee series, Cine Club Marilyn, opens at Gloucester Guildhall tomorrow.

  • GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES: June 6 at 2 pm – “Marilyn Monroe (celebrating her centenary this year!) and Jane Russell know that diamonds are a girl’s best friend in Howard Hawks’ marvellous musical … With musical numbers both sumptuous and ironic, ravishing colour and costumes and effortlessly charismatic performances from both leads, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is an exuberant social satire.”
  • HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE: June 13 at 2pm – “Icons of midcentury cinema Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall and Betty Grable are a triple threat in How to Marry a Millionaire. As the original trailer promised: ‘Watch the fur fly as the most talked-about girls in Hollywood go out loaded for big game!’ … Breezy and buoyant, How to Marry a Millionaire is a delightful comedy with wonderful performances, lines like ‘I already think you’re quite a strudel’ and fashion to die for (all shot in CinemaScope, as Hollywood’s first picture to use the format).”
  • SOME LIKE IT HOT: June 20 at 2pm – “After witnessing a mob hit, two Chicago musicians go on the run, donning drag and joining an all-female band to try and outwit their pursuers. The group’s singer, Sugar Kane (a gorgeous, wide-eyed Marilyn Monroe) leads them further into ever more extravagant lies … Celebrate Monroe’s centenary year with her sensational performance in Billy Wilder’s sizzling, masterful romp.”

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is showing again at the Ritz Cinema in Belper, Derbyshire on Sunday, June 7, at 2:15 pm.

Also on Sunday, the first of two Monroe classics comes to the Northern Light Cinema in Stretford, Greater Manchester (chosen by staffer Allan as a June highlight.)

And looking further ahead, five of Marilyn’s ‘Monday Night Classics’ are showing from June 29 at Campus West in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.
